Seawall Repair & Inspection FAQ

Everything you need to know about seawalls — what they are, how they fail, and what you can do about it.

What is a seawall?

A seawall is a structure or barrier between your property and an adjacent waterway — lake, canal, river, or ocean. It keeps water away from your upland areas and protects against erosion and flooding.

How long can a seawall last?

Many original Fort Lauderdale and Miami seawalls are 50–60 years old and near end of life. New construction by a professional company can last 70–80 years thanks to modern materials.

How do you maintain a seawall?

Start with an expert assessment. Many homeowners conduct annual inspections to avoid surprises. A report will identify urgent repairs and longer-term items, with written cost estimates for everything.

Can a damaged seawall be repaired?

Yes — if not too far gone. Regular maintenance is key. Neglected seawalls can reach a point of no return requiring full replacement at ~$800–$1,100 per linear foot, so early investment in repairs pays off.

Why do seawalls fail?

Rain creates hydrostatic pressure on the upland side. Water finds lateral paths through small cracks, which widen over time. Weep holes and Jet Filter™ technology provide controlled pressure relief.

Can my seawall's condition affect a home sale?

Absolutely — just like a roof. If an inspection shows a buyer needs $20K in repairs, that impacts their offer. Investing in repairs before listing can protect your asking price.
